With my camera at hand, I’m always coming across subjects that I envision into a painting, an old panel truck with the light shining on the side door, some Eucalyptus trees in the Fall by the side of the road, my friend at her work thinking about her boyfriend, or the Irish Wolfhounds in our neighborhood. Borrowing from some of my favorite past and present artists such as Nicolai Fechin and Jeffrey Watts, I draw and paint the essential details and leave the rest loose and impressionistic as if the image is slowly emerging onto the canvas or paper. As I’m painting I’m getting to know the people and animals (and other subjects) even more, they become like friends and surround me in my studio until they’re off to a new home.
I love to use many mediums as well. Watercolors, oils, charcoal and pastels each in their own way lend themselves to whatever subject I choose. Whichever medium I use though, in the end, I have recorded the memories of the moment with art.
