I feel strongly that art has a fundamentally important role to play in our lives, and in society as a whole. Yet often I feel that the real essence of painting has disappeared from our world. Materialism, commercialism and other aspects of society have come to endanger painting from one side, while new styles in art mean that engagement in painting itself can be low.
