Artists Talk about their Art Style
When it comes to art, we all know what we love and what we hate. When roaming an art gallery, we also know the pieces that challenge us. These are the ones we often stare at the longest. We may not necessarily like them, but they capture our attention and get us thinking. They have value.
Question: I have been told that my painting styles are so varied. That is because I haven't found my artistic style yet so I'm trying on many. How did you find your unique style?
Dialog: If you ever want to sell in a gallery, you must have a recognizable style. If you're just painting for your own pleasure and creative outlet, paint whatever your heart desires! Art education helps define your style and of course practice helps you discover what gives you joy. Happy painting!
Dialog: I'm wondering do we need to have a style. I see artist paint the exact same way for years. We as people don’t stay the same so why should our art. Or should we stick to one style at a time?
Dialog: Our art does change over time so you can say your style changes over time. Look at Van Gogh. His style changed. But you can tell his work in general. What you want to "keep" is your "brand"...the things that ppl can recognize as "your specific thing". For me, that thing is how I create clouds, my love of texture and you will always see 2 birds somewhere...either in the sky or in my signature. With my abstract, you'll see my love of texture and geometric shapes as well as my 2 birds in my signature.
Dialog: I have found that when I painted focusing more on my feeling and what I wanted to paint, the "how" tends to take care of itself. Basically my earlier work always suggested a personal style. But my style didn't come together until I stopped thinking about it.
Dialog: I found my style after two years of being scattered. I tried something just for fun, and a coworker loved it, so she bought it. Then my husband's coworker saw that same piece, and ordered one like it. My style is still evolving, but I feel confident in my work now.
What do you think about your style?
When we’re deciding on works of art to decorate our own homes, we have an opportunity to choose from the styles of art we love the most. However, that doesn’t mean we suddenly box ourselves in. It just means knowing more about how to best find the art you’re going to love the most.
If you know you love ‘abstract’ and dislike ‘impressionism’, it makes it easier to know where to look. If you don’t know the difference between ‘abstract’ and ‘impressionism’ then you may get a bit stuck.
