Congratulations to Lisa Bahouth: Our September 2012 Artist Of the Month
While Lisa Bahouth’s paintings speak on a technical level about color, shape, line, and composition, the works reach deeper to explore the themes of “home.” Her recent works have grown from abstractions of the endless possibilities of apartment layouts. This act of painting becomes phenomenological, which encompasses abstraction.
The different combinations of insects, animals, plants, rocks, and anything else with mass, reflect the make up of a specific place. The painter recognizes this and uses the vocabulary of landscapes to begin many of her paintings. She then has the freedom to include or exclude these finite details in her paintings to make a harmonious, or disharmonious home for herself. When these works on paper or canvas are hung on a wall, they begin to tell stories and hold a history of their own.
Lisa’s work also pulls from the truths found in music and improvisation. Painting is a non-performing visual manifestation of her musical nature. It is so ingrained in her work that abstraction - the idea of composition, form and color - have become the objects with which she works as if they are the objective.
In most of her shows, Lisa builds upon her older existing installations to reference homelessness, and home making. Newly found pieces of trash, documents and throwaway materials are included in each new phase of the installation. All these different processes and manifestations of her work embody what it feels like to not have a real home. The desire to make a make shift home through her art is the result of this condition and a promise to her progression.
Lisa will be having a solo show of her paintings and installations which will be held October 17 – November 12th, 2012
